The second-generation Pontiac Firebird was produced between 1970 and 1981 and saw some radical changes in power during the EPA influenced decade. In 1971, the legendary 455cid engine first became available in the Trans Am model. Output from the 455HO was rated at 335hp. The option was discontinued after 1976 for Trans Am and Formula models and by 1979, the best-selling year ever for the Trans Am, the 6.6 (400cid) power plant was restricted to 220hp. The owner of this mean green 1979 Formula decided to set things right by sourcing a 1975 455cid motor mated to a TH400 automatic transmission and stock posi differential. The owner reports 2,000 miles since the rebuild that includes a high-flow water pump, 7qt oil pan, 850 quadra jet carb, new valves, guides & seals and pistons. Add an upgraded front suspension, new disc brake system components, fuel tank and a serious sound system and this ride is complete. This beautiful 1979 Pontiac Firebird Formula is located in our Milwaukee showroom. While talking numbers is interesting for a while, the soul of the car really gets your heart racing. The Blaze Red paint looks showroom fresh and coordinates smoothly with the red and gray cloth interior. The red carpet shows no signs of sun fade, and the dash has no bubbling or splits, which is all too common on these cars. 1987 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am GTA

1987 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am GTA

Engine: 6.0L LQ4 V8
Transmission: 4 Speed Automatic
Mileage: 82,688 ( actual )

If there is one thing most Trans Am admirers can agree upon, it is the disappointing output of the third generation’s 305 and 350 TBI/TPI motors. However, our newest arrival here at the Dallas Gateway Classic Car showroom has rectified this common complaint. This beautiful example of a 1987 Pontiac Trans Am GTA will not only have you floored in the visual department, but will exceed your performance expectations as well. A complete powertrain swap to a LQ4 6.0 V8 and 4L80E transmission from the boat-anchored 350 TPI she came with was performed by Larry’s Speed & Custom of Fort Worth approximately 3000 miles ago. No expense was spared in completing this build, and all necessary swap components were employed. Custom wiring harness, Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator, Walboro 255 LPH fuel pump, Holley EFI fuel rails paired with an LS1 intake, billet coil brackets, LSSimple alternator kit, BMR adjustable torque arm, and BRP headers with muffler delete. Hawks motor mounts and a Blackheart transmission crossmember keep the new powertrain properly supported while you dust Vette-after-Vette. New calipers hugging drilled and slotted rotors insure a positive and pulse-free stop. Additionally, the interior was upgraded to a custom, yet tastefully-upgraded upholstery. The body of this GTA has only 82,688 miles, so this bird’s skeleton was a great candidate for this impressive and popular swap. For more HD pictures and video, visit www.gatewayclassiccars.com. 1973 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400

1973 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400

Engine: 400
Transmission: Turbo Hydromatic 400
Mileage: 82,436 ( undocumented )

Gateway Classic Cars of Tampa is proud to offer this excellent 1973 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 Ram Air. This Formula 400 Firebird checks off all the necessary boxes to make this a worthy car for the first time “Muscle Car” purchaser looking to have fun, or the long-time collector looking to add to an existing collection. The first box to be checked off is “appearance”. How appealing does it look? At first glance, the Navajo Orange is an eye catcher and combines well with the beige bucket interior. The front end looks aggressive and sucks you in with dual snorkel functioning “Ram Air” hood. The sleek, bold styling of the car exudes a classy confident attitude. The second box is “performance”. This Firebird performs just as good as it looks. It boasts a 400 cubic inch numbers matching motor, along with a 4-barrel carburetor and “Ram Air” option. All you need to do is step on the gas to awaken the sleeping giant. Power is transferred from the engine through a Turbo Hydromatic 400 automatic transmission to a 10 bolt posi-traction rear end which now houses 3.42 gears. The third box is “value”. To some this may be the most important box. How do you determine value or forecast value in a car? There are several factors that affect this category: two of which are already checked off. Let’s think in the terms of supply and demand. In 1973, Pontiac only produced 4,622 Formula 400 cars. Many fell victim to the crusher or salvage yard. Some were torn apart and key authentic components were replaced with non-original parts. Others are parked in non-operating condition and rusted out in a field, barn, or garage. Very few of the 4,622 that were produced made it to 2018 with original equipment that were also kept in prestigious condition. Of the 4,622 Formula 400 vehicles, only 533 had the functioning “Ram Air” hood. Yes, this is one of the 533 born with that very special option. Another factor of determining value is, “can you prove the car is what it is?” Yes, with documentation, VIN, data plate, and number stampings, which this 73 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 Ram Air has. Lastly, with Camaro’s fetching top tier prices, the focus has turned to what the next “Muscle Car” to ignite is. Buying trends are already showing favorable promise to the second-generation Firebirds. When you take all of this into consideration, this car is a trustworthy investment. Most of all, you can hop in and enjoy cruising it while your investment appreciates. You can place a big check mark in this box! Options include (cold) Air Conditioning, Power Brakes, Power Steering, Tilt Wheel, Seat Belts, Vinyl Interior, Raised White Letter Radial Tires, Rally Wheels, and Posi Traction. 1985 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

1985 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

Engine: 411 CID V8
Transmission: Automatic
Mileage: 59,610 ( undocumented )

For sale in our Chicago showroom is this incredibly powerful 1985 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am GTA Tribute. How powerful you ask? How’s 840 horsepower? With a 411 cubic inch small block Chevrolet V8 sending all those ponies through a 2-speed automatic Powerglide spinning the custom aluminum driveshaft into the Ford 9” fabricated rear end. The aluminum center section houses a set of 4.56 rear gears to get the 29.5/10.5-15 racing slicks spinning and rocket this GTA down the quarter-mile in the 9’s at 146mph! The build was done starting in 2001. While 840 horsepower is very impressive, getting all that power to the ground is ultimately what matters. The 10.5 in slicks help plenty, but the mini-tub 4-link suspension really keep everything level. Plenty of work was worked into all spots of the chassis including frame ties, front suspension limiting straps, coilovers, and the 4-link suspension. Wilwood brakes on all 4 corners bring this white lightning to a halt quickly and safely. The engine and transmission have both been refreshed with no passes since. The vehicle has a title, but it is not currently street-legal. With over 800 horsepower ready to slingshot you through the traps in the blink of an eye, this is one exhilarating machine. Options include: T-tops, Tilt Steering Wheel, Seat Belts, Kill Switch, Racing Wheels, Alloy Wheels, Posi-Traction Rear Axle, and Racing Slicks.
