Gateway Classic Cars is proud to offer a 1961 Mercedes SL 190 Cream in color with a deep red interior. Daimler-Benz began development of the 190 SL in 1952, just before the introduction of its volume Pontoon sedans. Like the sedans, it was constructed with a welded frame-floor structure and separate sub-frame. However, it rode a shorter wheelbase, not coincidentally, the same as the 300 SL. As the company’s first volume sports car, the 190 SL shared the 120-horsepower, 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine and running gear with the W120 model Type 180 Sedan, while also offering styling like the legendary 300 SL Gullwing Coupe and Roadster. The resemblance to the 300 SL was certainly intentional. At $3,840 new in 1955, it was half the price of its muscular sibling, which introduced a roadster model of its own starting in 1957. The 190 SL (for Sport Light) was produced from 1955 through 1963, with Mercedes-Benz building 25,881 units. The factory claimed a top speed of 110 mph, with 0–60 mph times of 13.3 seconds, while also offering up to 26 mpg, the perfect combination for effortless touring. The 190 SL was powered by a new, slightly over square 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp) Type M121 BII 1.9 L straight-four SOHC engine. It was in the Shelby Heritage Center in Las Vegas Nevada the last two years on display. This is the first Shelby-built FIA Group II, SCCA Trans Am Series Competition Mustang Coupe. VIN 7R01A164680. This is the first car built (of the 26 total Road Race Competition Coupes), Produced at the LAX, Shelby California Facility. Ordered/Purchased by George Kirksey (Associated Press/Houston, Texas, Professional Sportswriter, Shareholder of the Houston Astro Baseball Franchise, responsible for bringing Major League Baseball to Houston, Executive Promoter and amateur Porsche 911 SCA Club Race Car Driver). Partnered with Carroll Shelby and Freddie Van Beuren Sr. (Wealthy Businessman from Mexico) to purchase the very first, Shelby Competition Coupe, to compete in the 1967 SCCA Trans-Am/A-Sedan Championship. Purchased for the sum of $5,500 plus a $150 delivery charge. Delivered, sorted and used as a "mule" test car for the remaining 25 cars Shelby would build in 1967 by Chuck Cantwell and Jerry Titus prior to delivery at the Willow Springs, California Race Track (historical notes from Cantwell and Titus are available in the historical document files), to Sebring International Raceway for the second race (of the eleven-race series) of the 1967 Trans-Am Season (finished 41st/51 laps/Differential failure). Kirksey and VanBeuren Sr. named their Race Team Effort "dos caballos" (two horsemen). VanBeuren Sr. also owned a '65 Shelby Mustang GT350 "R-Model" that his son Freddie VanBeuren Jr. raced in SCCA B-Production and the 1967 12 Hour race at Sebring, International Raceway, Sebring, FL. The Dos Caballos Team Logo was 2 Ford Mustang-style running horses. With over 8 months alone in the body and paint, the body was sculpted out of metal and was coated in a custom pepper gray metallic paint that looks sinister from all angles. Shaved door handles keep the look sleek and freshly powder coated Forgiato 3-piece GTR wheels finish off the look well. A clear bra was placed on multiple areas of the car as well to protect it from stone chips. This car makes an amazing show car but performs just as well on the track! Awaiting to come alive under the hood sits a 5.4L V8 that came in the GT-500’s originally, however this one has been equipped with a 2.3L VMP supercharger producing a dyno-proven 700+ horsepower to the rear wheels! Bigger injectors, oversized aluminum Shelby intercooler, Ford Racing single blade throttle body connected to a cold air intake, and a Diablo tune insures max efficiency and power. Keeping this Shelby hooked to the pavement is a Ford Racing performance lowering suspension and a Watts 4-link in the rear. This paired with the 11.5” wide wheels up front and 14” wide wheels on the rear, this Mustang handles like it is on rails! With so much power and excellent cornering abilities, the only thing left are the brakes. Taking care of this is a set of Wilwood disc brakes both front and rear with 6-piston calipers up front and 4-pistons in the rear grabbing down on a set of cross drilled and slotted rotors. For sale in our Fort Lauderdale showroom we have this out of the ordinary 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Nomad. This example of a Nomad is probably one of the nicest one out there. Professionally frame off build and restored. Chevrolet produced the first series of the Nomad’s from 1955 till 1957. For many car enthusiasts the 57 model is the top of the line, crème de la crème version. It doesn’t happen often that these wagons roll into our showrooms. We are thrilled to feature this 1957 Bel Air in our South Florida showroom. For us it was love on the first sight and the same will happen to you. The color combination with a white top and a burgundy body paint with gold flakes in it looks stunning. The massive chrome accessories/trim are in fantastic condition. There is only one phrase that can describe the engine compartment, “Wow that is beautiful”!!! Lots of chrome everywhere. Take a peak underneath the Nomad and you will be very satisfied too.
