This stripe package could have been ordered on any trim level back in 68’ but was standard on the SS trim package. The black vinyl interior is in good condition and features a custom alloy console around the Hurst shifter providing a unique look. Sitting under the cowl hood of this 68’ Camaro is a 383 CID Stroker V8 engine that features an MSD ignition, aluminum/alloy “Stroker 383” valve covers, an Edelbrock aluminum intake, a Holley carburetor, and a chrome air cleaner. This 383 Stroker V8 produces 454 horsepower and 484 lb-ft torque. Headers run from the V8 to the full exhaust and provide a wild, raspy sound. A T56 six-speed manual transmission with a Hurst pistol grip shifter has been installed to transfer the power to Ford 9” Posi-Traction rear end that houses 4.10 gears. Moser axels extend the horses to the rear wheels and tires providing maximum performance. This gorgeous red exterior and black vinyl interior Z28 was frame off restored approximately 15 years ago at approximately 49,000 original miles. The current owner has put the remainder of the miles (it currently shows 49,576 miles) on the vehicle in the last 5 years. With a 302 cubic inch V8 coupled to a 4 speed manual transmission feeding a 12 bolt 4:11 Positraction rear, and Rally wheels wrapped in radials, the power brakes and power steering complete the factory configuration. This vehicle is documented by the NCRS and shows that the official production date was 04/05/1968. The original delivery dealer was dealer code 242 in zone 49. The name and address of that dealer is believed to be Hornbeck Chevrolet Inc in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. The Z28 performance package was designed (with further modifications) to compete in the SCCA Trans-Am series. It included a solid-lifter 302 V8, 4-speed transmission, power disc brakes, and two wide stripes down the hood and trunk lid. The Z28 option code was introduced in December 1966 for the 1967 model year. It was the brainchild of Vince Piggins, who conceived offering "virtually race-ready" Camaros for sale from any Chevrolet dealer. This option package was not mentioned in any sales literature, so it was unknown to most buyers. The Z28 option required power front disc brakes and a close-ratio Muncie 4-speed manual transmission (posi-traction was optional). It featured a 302 cu in (4.9 L) small-block V-8 engine, 3" stroke crankshaft with 4" bore, an aluminum intake manifold, and a 4-barrel vacuum secondary Holley carburetor of 780 cfm. The engine was designed specifically to race in the Trans Am series (which required engines smaller than 305 cu in (5.0 L). Advertised power of this engine was listed at 290 hp (216 kW). This is an under-rated figure. Chevrolet wanted to keep the horsepower rating at less than 1 hp per cubic inch, for various reasons (e.g. insurance and racing classes). The factory rating of 290 hp occurred at 5300 rpm, while actual peak for the high-revving 302 was closer to 360 hp (268 kW) (with the single four barrel carb) and 400 hp (298 kW) (with optional dual-four barrel carbs) at 6800-7000 rpm. The Z28 also came with upgraded suspension, racing stripes on the hood and trunk lid, '302' front fender emblems on the 67 and early 68 cars, and 'Z28' emblems in late 68 & 69. It was also possible to combine the Z28 package with the RS package. Only 602 Z28s were sold in 1967, along with approximately 100 Indianapolis Pace Car replicas. 7,199 Z28s were sold in 1968. The 1967 and 1968 Z28s did not have the cowl induction hood, optional on the 1969 Z28s. The 1967 Z28 received air from an open element air cleaner or from an optional cowl plenum duct attached to the side of the air cleaner that ran to the firewall and got air from the cowl vents. 15-inch rally wheels were included with Z28s while all other 1967-9 Camaros had 14-inch wheels. The origin of the Z28 nameplate came from the RPO codes - RPO Z28 was the code for the Special Performance Package. RPO Z27 was for the Super Sport package. Now for sale at Gateway Classic Cars is this beautiful unrestored 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS 396 L-89! This is a number matching car with only 40,935 documented miles, with the rare aluminum heads. The authenticity and miles are sworn and notarized by the original owner. The car was purchased brand new at Herb Hallman Chevrolet in Reno. Equipment on this car include the Muncie 4-speed manual transmission, 12 bolt rear end, 4:20 gears, air injection reactor (smog), Delco AM radio, center console, black vinyl interior, front and rear spoilers, Rallye wheels and redline tires. Finished in the original color “Corvette Bronze” (code 0-0), offered only in 1968. This is the punchy 375hp L89 engine! This rating was extremely conservative, since it was the same motor that made 425 HP in1965 without any changes. While the L89 option didn't bring any more horsepower, it did offer a weight savings of at least 50 pounds. The aluminum heads were exact copies of the high-performance rectangular port heads that the L78s and L72s came equipped with. With some simple carb tuning, tubular exhaust headers and a re-curve on the distributor, these cars could be running mid 13s easily. Because of the high-revving nature of the solid-lifter big-blocks, you couldn't order power steering or air conditioning with any of these engines. This is a very rare car and in original factory condition. The base price of the car back in the day was $2,694 but with these extensive options it totaled $4,172.50. With inflation that equates to about $30,000 in today’s money. Not a lot really when you consider our top of the line Camaro these days is more than double that. Under the Glasstek hood and between the glasstek fenders sits an evil 572 Cubic inch Big block Chevy that gulps down alcohol through a Ron’s terminator injection system that is rated at 1475 cubic feet per minute. The air and fuel then flow to the pro filer rectangular aluminum heads into the Merlin block where this mixture is compressed to 14 to 1. This bad boy has way too many high tech parts to list everything, let’s just say it’s very quick. Now, what good would all this horsepower be if you had no way to plant it to the ground? Ok, here we go. This beast of a ride has been back halfed using R.J. race cars four link with pro stock bars connecting it to the Strange center section housing 4.56 final gears. The final gears then send this massive power to the wheels via Strange engineering 35 spline axles that are connected to the wrinkle wall drag slick with 5/8 inch studs. Between the torque monster under the hood and the strange engineering axles is the workhorse powerglide 2 speed transmission which houses a nine and a half inch, 4500 stahl converter which allows the engine to get deep into the power curve. I have pages of performance parts that have been shoehorned into this lighted ’68 Camaro for sale. I can tell you it all equals QUICK! BACKGROUND: The Chevrolet Chevelle is a mid-sized automobile which was produced by Chevrolet in three generations for the 1964 through 1977 model years. Part of the General Motors (GM) A-Body platform, the Chevelle was one of Chevrolet's most successful nameplates. The 1972 Chevelle featured single-unit parking/side marker lights on their front fenders, outside of a revised twin-bar grille. All Malibus had concealed wipers. The SS equipment option requirements remained the same as those in 1971, any optional V8. The 1972 Chevelle series had wide enough appeal to qualify as America's second-best-selling car. A rack and pinion steering setup and coil over shocks in the rear help this Corvette handle better than it did when new. A Crate 350 CID V8 was installed 6 years ago and runs strong! The V8 engine features alloy valve covers, Edlebrock aluminum intake, a Holley fuel injection setup, and a D.U.I. distributor. An aluminum radiator has been employed to keep this Crate 350 cool on hot days. A rebuilt 700R4 automatic transmission was installed 3 years ago and shifts the power beautifully to the IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) with 3.08 gears. The odometer reads 61,265, which represents the actual mileage on the car, and approximately 25,000 on the Crate V8 engine.
