Bought new in Davis, CA, the car has always led a pampered life and has always been serviced at which has allowed it get reach the mileage it has. Sporting the original gold paint with the owner-added two tone chocolate brown,it looks like it may have been ordered that way, but sharp-eyed Z-car people will know better. The black interior is all original as well, and certainly doesn't look like it's over 40 years old. The owner claims the tires are brand new and the car was serviced just prior to coming in here on consignment. This little sweetheart also has the optional Datsun spoke wheels and the rear window louvers. The original window sticker still looks new. This is truly a time capsule that runs and drives remarkably well for its age and reported mileage of 178,737 (this cannot be confirmed by GCC), but considering everything is backed up with service records, it's for real. The 2.8L engine is larger than its predecessor and has the reliable Bosch fuel injection system metering the fuel. It still has a full size spare, a feature that was discontinued soon afterward. This one is unique for several reasons, and it's a beautiful example of the "Z" series from Datsun, they were entering the sports car arena beginning in 1970 with the 240Z. The 1978 280Z models were the most refined of all the Z-series cars to that point. This year, the manual five-speed transmission was first available in North America-bound cars. Very few 5-spds were ordered from the factory; most were 4-spds. This was also the first and only year for black being an available color on Z-cars. They were known as "Black Pearl Edition" models. Additional refinements can be found in convenience options like air conditioning. 1978 was the first year that it was an integrated system, not a "hang-on" type installation. Sharp-eyed Z-car enthusiasts will immediately notice the factory aluminum road wheels, considered to be the single rarest option for these cars.
