Gateway Classic Cars Versus Auctions

There are advantages and disadvantages, going the auction route.

Advantages of auctions:

  • You get to participate in an exciting event.
  • In high-end auctions, you may rub elbows with celebrities.
  • You get to see your car bid up before your eyes.
  • You sell your car right away, during the weekend of the event, and get your money within a few days.

Disadvantages of auctions:

  • High consignment fees. Some of the popular auctions are now charging $1,500+ and more to put your car through the auction block.
  • You have to transport your car to the event. In the event the auction house allows you protection under Reserve amount and your car does not sell, then you are responsible for its immediate removal and transportation back to your home.
  • Once the event is over, your car is no longer in the market as far as that auction house goes. You are on your own again.
  • Many popular auction houses are now requiring no Reserve or discouraging a Reserve by charging higher consignment fees. Under no reserve, your car can sell for far under its value.
  • You are required to surrender your title before the event. You lose control over the car, its final price and the entire sales process.
  • You will be charged a Seller's fee/commission from the final bid price, giving you a lower net price.
  • Very few people at the auction event are buyers. It is estimated that only 3-5% of attendees are real buyers in any given auction.
  • People who buy at auctions are considered sophisticated cash buyers. These people are savvy and will buy at the lowest price possible. Very few vehicles bring what they are worth.
  • Auctions limit the audience and exposure of your vehicle.
