When Nissan introduced an all-new 300ZX in 1990, the car was so good that nobody cared it shared a name with the predecessor that had become the poster child for the "boulevardier." And it shared nothing beyond the name with that earlier car. Known as the Z32 generation of Nissan's renowned Z cars, the new model featured a quad-cam, 24-valve V-6 rated at 222 horsepower, stronger even than the previous model's top-dog turbo engine. The vehicle featured clean, wind tunnel-proven lines and looked muscular.
With many cars equipped with T-tops, Nissan boasted of a structure for the removable roof cars that was as rigid as many competitors' solid-roof cars. That rigid construction paid off when the company chose to Debut a convertible to the lineup in 1993. Built-in conjunction with American convertible specialists ASC (the same people who helped Porsche develop a drop-top version of its 944 sports car four years previous), the 300ZX Convertible featured a "basket handle" rollover-type bar for safety and increased rigidity.
