I like to think that in 1972 an excited young person was handed the keys to this convertible VW Super Beetle. At this point they dropped the top and turned on the radio and “Saturday in the park” from Chicago poured out of the speaker as they ran through the gears excited about the future while the sun shone on their face and the warm wind flowed through their hair. It is at this point that in my mind there is a slight smell of patchouli oil. Ok, sorry, let’s talk about this sweet classic. While a car is only new once, this one is close, very close. The paint is bright red and the cloth interior and top are tan and it looks great together. The 1600 CC air cooled mill under the rear deck has that VW sound that lets you know it is ok to lower the right foot a bit more. Let’s face it, the VW convertible is about the journey not the destination and the people that love the VW Beetle understand this. I’ll bet that a study of Beetle owners would show that VW owner have fewer frown lines, lower blood pressure and the slight lingering smell of patchouli oil.
