Rescued from a barn in the Indiana countryside, along with several other vehicles, this 1958 Skyliner is quite the find. One of fewer than 15,000 units produced for the 1958 model year. With a functional top that retracts with the flip of the switch, this retractable hard top is a steal at the price listed. Mechanically, the car is sound, and runs and drives just fine. This rare little gem would be a great car to drive and enjoy or buckle down and start putting your own touches to it. The Fairlane was revised in 1966. The appearance was changed to match the full-sized Ford, which had been restyled in the 1965 model year. The front end featured vertically stacked dual headlights. The XL, GT, and GTA packages were introduced, as well as a convertible to join the existing range of sedans, hardtops, and station wagons.
This example is a wonderful driving hardtop coupe all the way around. When this car was purchased out of California in 2013, it was immediately taken to a shop and gone over with a fine-tooth comb. The 289 CID V8 and C4 3 speed automatic transmission were pulled from the car. While they were out, the engine bay, engine, and transmission were all steam cleaned. The motor and transmission were thoroughly inspected for mechanical condition and reliability. The oil pan gasket, water pump, thermostat housing, bypass hose, heater core, instrument cluster, and lower dash panel were all replaced, and the underdash wiring was all cleaned up. This timeless classic is an all original survivor with a believed to be original 60,000 miles on it. It features the stock 332 V8 with automatic transmission which sings like a sewing machine down the road. This boat is a dream to drive and has all the get up and go you could ask for. The Motor appears to be all original and the parts that have been replaced such as brakes, fuel pump, water pump radiator and hoses have all been replaced with factory OEM parts. The paint and interior which are original to the car do show typical flaws with age. However, the color combination of black white and red is timeless and walks the fine line between pure class and hot rod hillbilly nostalgia. The Fairlane was Fords full size offering in 1957 and was the first time Ford outsold Chevrolet since 1935. This Fairlane may look relatively stock as you walk by it but once the ignition hits and the beast come to life you can tell appearances are deceiving. We will get to that soon enough. The white paint on the car is slick and understated just as planned. The trim is minimal with the custom rear chrome bumper really giving the car a very smooth hotrod look. The round brake lights, something that people will see often, look custom but are exactly what should be on there. Pop the reverse style hood and one of the coolest engines I have in a Fairlane sits for all the world to see. The custom built 428 bug block has been loaded up with all kinds of go-fast goodies. From the huge Street demon carb to the adjustable rockers this engine was made to make some serious reliable power....
