The Thunderbird was first introduced by Ford in 1955, and was not marketed as a sports car like the Corvette, but rather, a personal luxury vehicle. 1958 was the first year that the Thunderbird had a rear seat and unibody platform, and future generations of the car increased in size until a redesign in 1977. For the same reason that the Mustang had a rear seat, the Thunderbird was changed to a 4-seat design to make it more family-friendly to increase sales. Also new for the remodel was the fixed-roof, pillarless hardtop design, although convertibles were still an option.
