1964 Chevrolet Corvair

View Description

Powering this little convertible is a rear mounted, 164 cubic inch, flat six cylinder engine and a 2 speed automatic powerglide transmission. Chevrolet claimed that the rear-engine design offered packaging and economy advantages, providing the car with a lower silhouette, flat passenger compartment floor, no need for power-assisted steering or brakes and improvements in ride quality, traction, and braking balance. The design also attracted customers of other makes, primarily imports. The Corvair stood out, with engineering different from other American offerings. It used GM's Z-body, with design and engineering that advanced the rear-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. The Corvair was built to rival the smaller light weight cars of its time like the Volkswagen Beetle, Ford Falcon, Plymouth Valiant, and the Studebaker Lark. This particular Corvair is in great...

1964 Chevrolet Corvair

View Description

The 1960-69 Chevrolet Corvair was the last radical mass-produced car from General Motors, although 1,710,018 units of the rear-engine auto were sold. The Corvair was highly unusual for a domestic vehicle, with its air-cooled, rear-mounted engine featuring the compact horizontally opposed piston layout of Porsche and VW Beetle engines. The Chevrolet Turbo-Air 6 is a flat-six air-cooled automobile engine developed by General Motors (GM) in the late 1950s for use in the rear-engined Chevrolet Corvair of the 1960s. It was used in the entire Corvair line and a wide variety of other applications. The Corvair's six-cylinder engine generated 80-95 horsepower, which was more than sufficient for the reasonably light car. The engine's use of air-cooling made it appealing to amateur aircraft builders, and small-volume engine builders established a cottage industry modifying Corvair engines for aircraft. Significant engineering changes were introduced in 1964, while the model lineup and styling remained relatively unchanged. The engine displacement was increased from 145 to 164 cu in (2. 4 to 2. 7 L) by an increase in stroke. The base engine power increased from 80 to 95 hp (60 to 71 kW). In 1964, an improvement in the car's swing axle rear suspension occurred with a...

1964 Chevrolet Corvair

View Description

This pint sized little cruiser is a whole bunch of fun for a small price. Corvairs were the economy car of the 1960s. They made 4 doors, coupes, and even vans and pickups. This particular example is the cream of the crop: a convertible. Hop in the bucket driver's seat, load up your 3 closest friends and go cruising in style in this crisp white drop top. Propelling this beauty is a opposed 6 cylinder engine mounted in the rear of the car. This air cooled engine makes a little more than 100 horsepower which is plenty to cruise around town. The example sports the optional 2 speed automatic transmission. She wears white paint on the exterior...
