With a monstrous 429 CID V8 thumping away under the hood paired with a C6 3-speed automatic transmission this Cougar was built to move. However, the 3-speed leaves a bit to be desired, so some work needed to be done. An overdrive/underdrive unit was installed at the back of the trans effectively splitting all the gears making it operate similarly to a 6-speed transmission with overdrive. Paired with the mode done to the engine, this is an incredibly fun power-cruiser.

The Mercury Cougar was introduced in 1967 as an upscale version of the Ford Mustang which was built on the same platform and shared similar power train options. The Mercury Cougar was redesigned with a heavier body styling in 1971 which gave it a much classier look compared to earlier models. A boldly prominent center grille and exposed headlights were the features of the new frontal appearance. This 1971 Cougar is powered by the ever popular 351 Cleveland V8 which is known for the huge amount of torque that they produce and with this particular engine only have around 2,500 miles since it was rebuilt definitely has plenty of power. BACKGROUND: With elegant styling and luxurious appointments, the Cougar debuted to the world as a gentleman-s alternative to the Mustang. For 1971, the Cougar was restyled, weighed less, and had only a one-inch-longer wheelbase than its predecessor.
