After barely surviving the 80\'s with overweight and underpowered cars Chevrolet was looking for a breath of fresh air in there supercar lineup and oh boy did they find it. The ZR-1 was introduced in 1990 as what was supposed to be an economical way to race Porsches and Ferraris. They got the racing part right but fell short on the economical part. The ZR-1 pretty much doubled the price of the Corvette adding an astounding $32633 to the sticker while some dealers were actually getting closer to $50000 for the option. The ZR1 option gave the Corvette 375 horsepower from the newly designed all aluminum twin overhead cam LT5. This motor was designed by the Lotus CORP and was actually built by the Mercury Marine Company in Stillwater Oklahoma. Final assembly of all ZR-1s was taken care of as usual at the Bowling Green KY plant.
