Introduced in 1969 the Mach 1 was an instant success with 5 engine variations. Anything from the basic 351 2V Windsor all the way up to the fire breathing 428 super Cobra Cobra Jet. Of course performance was a big part of the 'Mach 1' package but really it was more about the appearance. Only available in the sport coupe, as it was called in 69, this really was just a different way of saying fastback. Regardless of the motor all Mach 1's would have the matte black hood with the shaker scoop, as well as front chin and rear spoilers, it was an instant success. The Mach 1 would continue even through the Mustang II years but with weak sales and the performance just not there Ford would discontinue the model in 78. As with all of the muscle car performers of the late 60's Ford would reintroduce the Mach 1 name plate in 03 due to the need of a car that was both price and performance wise between the GT and the Cobra.
