1971 marked the beginning of the now famous and highly sought after R107 chassis 2-seat convertible roadster. This line of the model started as 350SL coupes in 1971 with a 3. 5L V8, but in 1972 they upgraded to the much more powerful and reliable 4. 5L V8 but this is where this cars rarity comes into play, only for 72- was the car denoted as a 350SL but was outfitted with the larger 4. 5L V8. In 1973 they shifted the name to 450SL to fall in line with the engine liter size, just as they do today in their new cars. Since it was a new model to the brand at the time the production numbers weren-t that high thus adding to these early models appreciation value. There are not many on the market for sale in this condition as many suffer from rust issues.
