1975 saw the launch of the XJS. The new British Grand Tourer was introduced as the replacement for the iconic E-Type. During an astonishing build run of 21 years, 115,413 units were produced by the Conventry manufacturer at their Browns Lane factory. The final, more aerodynamic version of the XJS was introduced in 1991. With a more efficient engine and subtle design changes, this version was available until production ceased in 1996. Originally developed by William Heynes Jaguar Chief Engineer and Vice Chairman using the platform and chassis of the then current Heynes designed XJ saloon, the XJ-S was noted for its prominent rear flying buttresses. The early styling initiated by Heynes and partially by Jaguar's aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer -- one of the first designers to apply advanced aero principles to cars.

A factory XJ-S convertible was launched in 1989, as Ford took control. The convertible top was built by Karmann; it was lined and weather-proof, and the V-12 convertible's price rose to $56,000.
