Beginning shortly after the close of WW II, Colin Chapman began building competition specials, soon progressing to selling cars available in kit form with the formation of Lotus Engineering in 1952. By 1957, Chapman and Lotus gained widespread acclaim with the release of the fiberglass bodied Elite, and especially with the elemental Seven roadster which was designed for the track and fast road work. While devastatingly effective, Lotus built only small quantities of the Seven in Series I and Series 2 iterations, plus the Super Seven through 1968, followed by continued production by Caterham to the present day. While many Caterhams and replica Sevens have been produced, actual Lotus-built examples like this example are quite rare and sought-after.
