Pontiac was introduced by General Motors in 1926 and was to be the companion to GM-s Oakland Division, which GM purchased in 1909. Shortly after in was introduced, Pontiac began outselling Oakland, and Pontiac became the only companion marque to outlive its parent company, as the last of the Oaklands rode off the assembly line in 1932. By 1933 Pontiac was producing the least expensive cars equipped with straight eight engines. They were able to keep cost down by using the body and other parts from a 6-cylinder Chevrolet Master. To differentiate it, they installed the -Silver Streak,- a large chrome strip running down the center of the hood.
