Lee Iacocca, who was the head of Chrysler at the time, wanted to compete with Mercedes in the roadster category in an effort to overcome their blue-collar image. So they collaborated with Alejandro De Tomaso (owner of Maserati) on the TC roadster. At its inception the 1989 TC used a slightly detuned 2. 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 cylinder out of a Dodge Daytona. For the 1990 and 1991 models they switched to a Mitsubishi sourced 3. 0 liter V6 and 4 speed automatic transmission. There are many resemblances to a LeBaron but even on a good day, a LeBaron would arguably never look this good.
