Its subdued understated elegance mixed with the most potent V8 option for the SL-Class at the time made it one of the most commercially successful Mercedes vehicles up to that point. Weighing over 3,600 pounds, the SL feels extremely well planted to the pavement. The added weight of all that luxury is no problem for the 5.6 liter V8 that was rated from the factory to produce 227 horsepower with 287-foot pounds of torque. A smooth-shifting automatic transmission keeps that V8 happy no matter what the road conditions are calling for.
