1964 Studebaker Avanti

Gateway Classic Cars of Atlanta is offering this rarely seen 1964 Studebaker Avanti R-1. This fine example appears to have been cosmetically restored, and shows very well. The body is painted a beautiful shade of green that has a very slight metallic flake, with a closely matched vinyl interior. This fine example is powered by a 289 V-8 mated to an automatic transmission. The engine bay is very well detailed, with some chrome accents. The same holds true for the interior, as she looks very well taken care of, and the console floor shift gives that sporty feel. The consignor states he bought her in 2005 from a used dealer, and has taken very good care of her. He also states that legend has it - this car is 1 of 52 for 1964 that have the '63 head lights installed.

BACKGROUND: The Avanti was a personal luxury coupe produced by The Studebaker Corporation June 1962 and December 1963. It originated as a doodle on a napkin in a jet plane west of Chicago by Sherwood Egbert just 37 days after he took over as President of Studebaker in February 1961. It was marketed as "America's only 4 passenger high-performance personal car." The Avanti broke nearly 30 records at the Booneville Salt Flats in Utah. Unfortunately the Studebaker factory in South Bend, IN shut down in December of 1963, and only 5800 Avanti's were produced during the production run. The naming rights to "Avanti" were purchased, and the Avanti II was produced from some years.

The odometer on this 1964 Avanti reads 30,375, the actual mileage is unknown, but approximately 1,000 miles have been enjoyed in the car since 2005.
