For sale in our Chicago showroom is this 1981 Dodge Charger 2.2. In 1981, the Charger nameplate returned as a performance package on the Omni 024. Called the Charger 2.2, it cost $399 extra and came with a hood scoop, quarter-window appliqués, special gearing, rear spoiler, and "Charger 2.2" tape graphics, as well as the new 84 hp, 2.2 L, 4 cylinder engine that was designed and built by Chrysler. A total of 7,306 were built. Chrysler's 2.2 L K-car engine appeared in 1981 as an upmarket option to the Volkswagen engine. This is the original, numbers matching engine for this Dodge. This engine was only available with a manual transmission. The original four speed manual transmission is in this vehicle. With only 11,699 original miles, this one-owner car boasts an AutoCheck score of 44. The AutoCheck score range for similar vehicles is 11-31. It was bought new at Dodge City, Countryside, Illinois in the spring of 1983. It is believed that only 25 Chargers were converted to convertibles. The original manual top has been kept in great shape. It's hard to believe it's 34 years old. The engine isn't the only thing that transforms this Omni to a Charger. The visual element of the identity switch from Omni 024 to Charger 2.2 is accomplished with a sprinkling of add-on exterior bits. A handsome reverse scoop is stuck on the hood, and a pair of pseudo air extractors is slapped on, one for each front fender. Finally, about ten square yards of black tape stripes and lettering are rolled onto the red and black paint scheme to make sure even myopic nerds can tell that a Charger has just rumbled by. Inside, the Charger is dressed quite attractively. The seats are sculptured in red corduroy, with matching material sewn onto the door panels. Everything else is black. The red and black dash, which is fitted with a speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for fuel level and amps, underscores the businesslike feeling. Everything on this piece of Mopar history is original, except for the battery and fuel pump. Options include: air conditioning, AM/FM radio, manual convertible top, cruise control, power brakes, power steering, seat belts, cloth interior, raised white letter tires, and aluminum/alloy wheels. This ultra rare Charger can be yours with one phone call!!! Located in our Chicago showroom, this 1981 Dodge Charger 2.2 can be seen including an HD video and pictures at www.gatewayclassiccars.com.
