SeatbeltsFor sale in our Chicago showroom is a 1960 Mercedes 220 SE Carbriolet Ponton. This rare Benz is one of only 1,112 Cabriolet vehicles produced between 1958-1960. This particular vehicle features the desirable Bosch Fuel Injection feeding the 2.2 Liter inline 6 Cylinder adequately and reliably allowing this high quality engine to perform much like a modern vehicle. The "Ponton" reference of these beautiful cars refers to the wide rounded fenders that made these cars iconic at the time. In 1960 these beautiful convertibles were offered for about the same cost as a Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible but were absent of power steering, power brakes and an automatic transmission. Mercedes was confident that the interior opulence of full leather upholstery, high quality wood grain trim, sleek body panels and over-engineered mechanics would allow a penetration into the American over-the-top, large, chrome-adorned tanks of the time.
This car is stunning at any angle from the large dramatic front grill, stylish understated chrome bumper, sleek stainless side panel trim and smooth glistening fenders that make this gorgeous Benz look like a tidy package wrapped neatly in the finest materials. Interior opulence was standard and the ivory steering wheel and gear shift knob stand out against the red leather upholstery and wood interior trim that was recently restored. This car runs and drives as well as it looks and is ready to turn some heads with the top up or down.
Recently this car has had many refurbishments and restorations including new leather seating surfaces, interior wood trim, undercarriage restoration and detail, cloth top and an upgraded radio with CD player. The carpeting is trimmed in red piping and all interior parts appear original or refurbished throughout the years.
