For sale in our Chicago showroom is a very original 1973 Volkswagen Beetle. The concept for building a small vehicle to handle the roads in Germany began in the 1930's with the first production models of the beetle turning out in 1941. I doubt that many people though such a small, inexpensive, air-cooled car would become the icon that it is today. Referred to as Volkswagen or "Peoples Car" the simple design and rugged durability proved itself to be a car for the masses and after many years of service it's not too uncommon to still see these little "Bugs" on the road keeping up with modern traffic.
With a design that was not only as cute as...well....a bug, but also aerodynamic and functional as well as an affordable price and good warranties, these cars quickly became successful in the American market of then oversized cars that achieved minimal gas mileage. It is rumored that due to the mostly sealed undercarriage that these cars could actually float for a period of time on water. They were also famous for not having very good heat which in later years just added to part of the overall charm.
This fine example of a well preserved original is truly a sight for sore eyes. After years of meticulous maintenance this Robin Blue beauty really has been loved over the years and is ready for the white glove treatment from the lucky new owners. The original 1600cc opposed cylinder "boxer" engine starts right up and has that famous Volkswagen exhaust chirp that we all know and love. In addition to the shiny paint this car also has "Leatherette" interior with basket-weave seating surfaces and matching high grain door panels. The simple layout of the instrument panel and easy shifting 4-speed gearbox make this car very easy and fun to drive.
This car was purchased new at the J.S. Motors dealer in Folsom, Pennsylvania and featured a list price of $2,499.00 plus $44.00 for the leatherette interior and $50.95 for dealer delivery. Not a bad deal for a car that is still around 43 years later. The original window sticker and dealer inspection checklist are included with the sale. "No Charge" options on this car included front bucket seats, full carpeting, flow-through ventilation, rear window defogger, heater and defroster, day/night mirror, glove compartment lock, vanity mirrors, four speed transmission, automatic ignition key alarm, courtesy light and safety glass windows.
