When the automotive media and Chevrolet brass convened for a press luncheon at the New York International Auto Show in May 1966, there were two questions waiting to be asked by inquiring minds: Did Chevrolet have an answer in-store for Ford's best-selling Mustang, and if so, what would it be named? General Manager Pete Estes answered both in the affirmative with one word: “Panther." That project would come to fruition just four-months later when Chevrolet unveiled the car on September 29 as a 1967 model. Renamed Camaro, its conception and final styling were deeply influenced by GM's Bill Mitchell, whose very definition of a sporting automobile provided the blueprint for Chevrolet's entry into the pony-car segment spawned by the Mustang. The Camaro had a choice of V-8 engines, a satisfyingly curvaceous shape, bucket seats, and a floor shifter and 2+2 seating. To Mitchell, the Camaro would fulfill his vision of a 4-seat Corvette, and do it with more style than the Mustang, whose angular sculpting he countered with the Camaro's decidedly more voluptuous body. Other aspects of the car's styling were equally clean, making the Camaro one of the purest designs of the era. Yet, it was the performance potential that closed many-a-sale to the youthful buyers who flocked to showrooms for cars such as this matching-numbers 1968 RS/SS coupe. An AACA-award winner and formerly in a private collection, it presents in deep Matador Red with a black vinyl top and black Z87 custom interior. A black nose stripe, front and rear spoilers and 5-spoke SS wheels with redline tires combine for a sporty appearance that hints at the car's 396/325 HP big-block V-8 and automatic transmission with Gear Vendors overdrive. Generously equipped with power steering and front disc brakes, air conditioning, power windows, power trunk release, and an AM/FM radio, it also offers the RS option's hideaway headlights and trims, and new Hotchkis rear sway bar.
