The car was built by Lotus in the United Kingdom between 1976 and 2004. The Esprit was unveiled at the Turin Motor Show in 1972 as a concept car, and was progress to that of a stretched Lotus Europa chassis. In the beginning, the name Kiwi was anticipated, but in keeping with the Lotus custom of having all car model names start with the letter "E", the name became Esprit. The critical appearance of the Esprit came in 1999. Packing a small block V8 offering 350 horsepower and a variety of engines, chassis and braking improvements, like the addition of AP Racing brakes, stiffer springs and a revised ECU. Numerous visual changes were made as well, plus the addition of a large fiberglass rear wing. By this time the Esprit runs to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds as well as reaching 0-100 mph in less than 10 seconds, and weighs 2,800 lbs.
