Gateway Classic Cars in Las Vegas in pleased to present a 1974 Volkswagen Thing in Beige White with Grey cloth interior. The odometer is showing 87,795 miles undocumented. This is one of those iconic vehicles that is instantly recognizable and immediately brings to mind a day cruising along the coast with the sun on your face and the wind in your hair. This is car made for cruising the coast or anywhere nature calls.
The VW thing was introduced in 1968 and was in production until 1983 as the type 181 and began importation into the US in 1972. The Type 181 was born in 1969 when the West German military revisited the boxy, open-top theme last seen in the World War II-era Type 82 Kubelwagen. The idea came from the military's need for cheap, reliable, and durable transport, during a time where many European countries were awaiting international development of the (ultimately abandoned) Europa Jeep 4x4 project. The added benefit of interchangeable parts with the VW Bugs helped keep maintenance costs down. A civilian version followed for 1971 in Europe and Mexico, while U.S. models arrived for 1972. (It was marketed as the Safari in Mexico and the Thing in the U.S.). The removable top, folding windshield, and practically barren interior made it for open-air adventuring and easy cleanup.
This model features a 1600cc engine with a 4-speed standard transmission along with an AM/FM radio with cassette player, front disc brake conversion, a cloth interior and alloy wheels as well as power driver seat and tachometer. Accenting the interior are slated wood floor grates for a unique look and feel. The hood has a guard/luggage rack attached and the sides have side guard/ step rails.
