This particular Cougar XR7 was built in the Dearborn, Michigan. Powering this Cougar XR7 convertible is a 351 CID Cleveland V8, which is matched to a C4 automatic transmission. The Mercury Cougar was produced from 1967 to 1997, and was resurrected for a short run from 1999 to 2002. Initially the Cougar utilized the same platform as the Mustang, shortly thereafter and into the 1990s it would become Mercury's counterpart to the Ford Thunderbird. In 1999, the Cougar came back as a 2 door sports coupe, a design that gained a lot of attention for Mercury, but eventually ended its production run for good in 2002.
In 1971 the Cougar entered its second generation with a redesign that eliminated the disappearing headlights, which helped the center grille grow larger than before. The wheelbase was an inch longer than the first generation Cougar and it weighed less as well. 1973 marks the last year the Cougar was available in a convertible. Power front disc brakes became standard equipment along with an automatic transmission, a 4 speed manual transmission was available but rarely ordered. This Cougar XR7 convertible is finished in a gorgeous green metallic paint and features a white convertible top. The white vinyl interior is perfectly accented with the brown dash, console, and carpets.
