For sale at Gateway Classic Cars in our St. Louis showroom is a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS. Painted in Fathom Green with black stripes and a black vinyl roof complimented by a set of period correct American Racing Torque Thrust wheels and a Midnight Green vinyl interior that is complimented by an optional teak steering wheel. Powering this SS Camaro is a 300 horsepower 350 cubic inch small block V8. There were more than a handful of V8s available in 1969. For small blocks, this V8 had the highest rated horsepower. By this time, GM was well known for under rating their horsepower figures. Engine options available for the '69 Camaro started with a six cylinder rated at 155 h.p., 307 V8 rated at 200 h.p., 302 V8 (Z/28) rated at 290 h.p., 327 at 210, three 350s rated at 225, 250 and 300 h.p. and three different 396 big blocks ranging from 325 horsepower to 375 horsepower with optional aluminum heads. Many sources claim the 302 from the Z/28 to produce closer to the upper 300 range. However GM claims the 300 horsepower 350 t o be the most powerful small block offered for the 1969 Camaro. This 350 has been upgraded with Edelbrock aluminum heads and intake manifold along with a set of coated Hedman headers.
Backing up the 350 is a Muncie 4-speed manual transmission and a 12 bolt rear end. Slowing things down is accomplished with power four wheel disc brakes. The engine bay appears to be mostly stock and looks great with the finned aluminum valve covers. The air cleaner is fitted with a cowl induction air cleaner that seals against the bottom of the hood preventing the hot air form the engine bay entering in the carburetor. Cold air is dense air and that means more power. Development has shown cowl induction hoods to provide better air flow into the engine vs. forward facing hood scoops. When driving, the air hits the front of the car and travels up and over the scoops. With the cowl induction hood, the air hits a negative pressure area at the base of the windshield, forcing fresh air directly into the carburetor. The coated Hedman headers allow this engine to breath much more freely that the heavy and restrictive cast iron exhaust manifolds. They then feed the exhaust through a set of chambered mufflers giving this car such a great sound.
Inside is a stock appearing vinyl interior accessorized with a teak wood rimmed steering wheel, updated AM/FM radio with cassette, Hurst shifter and gauge pack sitting just ahead of the shifter. The odometer is showing 236 miles that is believed to be the mileage since the restoration. For more information on this 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS, call 618-271-3000 or stop by our St. Louis showroom.
