1976 BMW 2002

Gateway Classic Cars of Tampa is proud to offer this awesome 1976 BMW 2002 for sale. The story of how the BMW 2002 became to exist is actually a pretty cool one. Original the 02 series had a 1.6L that did not meet enthusiasts’ standards as it was a small horsepower engine. That is when two BMW executives modified both of their 1600-2 cars to hold a 2.0L engine. The story goes as follows. Helmut Werner Bönsch, BMW's director of product planning, and Alex von Falkenhausen, designer of the M10 engine, each had a two-liter engine installed in a 1600-2 for their respective personal use. When they realized they had both made the same modification to their own cars, they prepared a joint proposal to BMW's board to manufacture a two-liter version of the 1600-2. At the same time, American importer Max Hoffman was asking BMW for a sporting version of the 02 series that could be sold in the United States. So along came the BMW 2002. Producing 101 horsepower in a compact body.

This particular BMW 2002 has been restored. With a rebuilt engine in 2016 with only 4460 miles on it. It was painted in 2016 and was re-upholstered in 2016. The Weber carburetor has been rebuilt, the ignition system has been converted over to electronic ignition, the fuel pump and fuel filter have also been replaced. This 2.0L engine spins a row your own 4 speed manual transmission. The tan exterior melds well with the tan interior. All aspects of this BMW 2002 are in great shape. It includes a manual sunroof, A/C and AM/FM radio with a CD Player.
