Introduced at the Geneva auto show in early 1977, the 928 represented a lot of firsts for Porsche, including being their first front engine car, first production car V8, first water-cooled production car, and more. It was a completely unique platform which shared literally no parts with other Porsches in production. Talk about a fun car to go cross-country in - even the relatively under-powered 1978 model, with its 219 HP 4. 4L V8, it could still cruise at well over 100mph in comfort, AND (from personal experience) remain nearly unnoticed by sharp-eyed speed enforcement personnel. Back when the 928 first came out, here in the USA, few except the automotive cognoscenti knew what it was, or what it could do, performance-wise. It didn't look fast, and it certainly didn't appear to be going as fast as it was usually going when someone did notice it.
