1957 Ford Ranchero

While many may think of the El Camino as the first sport Ute, but it was actually the Ford Ranchero, which was introduced in 1957, when Ford put a pickup truck bed on their Ranch Wagon. The idea originated in Australia, and it made its way to the States. The Ranchero was marketed as a truck, even though it was based on the Ranch Wagon platform. It was rated for 1,190 lbs of cargo capacity in its six-foot long pickup bed, so it was competitive with Fords F100 pickup in its cargo hauling capability; yet it shared many of the amenities of Ford's cars, being much less utilitarian than their trucks. The Ranchero came in two series - the Custom 300 and the base model. The Ranchero Custom shared the same trim as the Custom series Ford cars had, both inside and out while the base model only shared the Custom series car lines' trim on the inside only.
