The Corvair was manufactured from 1960-1969. It takes the distinction of being the only American mass-produced car with a air-cooled rear engine. Approximately 1. 8 million Corvairs were manufactured. Many models were produced in 2-door, 4-door, wagon, convertible van, and even a pickup. The Corvair was introduced into the compact car market, which was gaining steam in the American market by the late 1950's. General Motors claimed that the rear engine platform provided a lower platform, flat passenger compartment and ride quality.
