When the Cougar was introduced in '67 it was based on the first generation Mustang but utilized all new sheet metal and a 3' longer wheelbase. Offered in a coupe only at first, the car featured a unique grill with covered headlights, and the rear featured large taillights that mimicked those from the thunderbird.
