In 1986, GM acquired Group Lotus. They went after the title of world's fastest production car based on the C4 Corvette. With input from GM, Lotus designed a new engine to fit in the ZR1. The result was what GM dubbed the LT5, a 5. 7L V8 engine putting out 375hp. This engine, with only 5,192 actual original miles, is mated to the original 6-speed manual transmission that is a thrill to drive. In addition to the engine, Lotus also helped design the upgraded braking and steering systems used in the ZR1. The ZR1, being 200 lbs. heavier than a stock C4, needed better braking and handling. In 1990, the 1991 ZR-1 and 1991 base model received updates to bodywork, interior, and wheels. The rear convex fascia that set the 1990 ZR-1 apart from the base model found its way to all 1991 models, making the high-priced ZR-1 even less distinguishable. While Corvettes have always been regarded as the flagship performance car in Chevys lineup, the ZR1 came as an above and beyond edition being one of the best alongside the Grand Sport in terms of collectability and production numbers. Chevrolet decided to step it up when they made the ZR1 by featuring a Mercury Marine built 5. 7-liter LT5 V8 under the hood which featured a 4 overhead camshaft courtesy of joint design between Chevrolet and Lotus and produced 375 horsepower through the ZF 6-speed manual gearbox. This powertrain was found to be worthy of competing in and winning a 24 hour endurance race and winning averaging 175 miles per hour while doing so. The suspension was a complete redesign over the C4 body style setup done by Lotus making for a tight handling experience which included the chassis being 4 inches wider in the rear to accommodate the colossal 315mm wide tires.
