The Thing is widely considered to be easy to repair and indestructible. While the memories of the Thing in Germany are more related to the armed forces or community service, the angular convertible with the tent roof has always been the practical alternative to the buggy for the Americans. Like the Bug, the VW Thing had the engine mounted in the rear, so the primary function of the front end of the car, besides carrying the spare tire and the gas tank, was serving as a trunk.
