In many ways Pontiac was just beginning to go through a renaissance when the plug was pulled and GM shuttered Pontiac's doors. A great example of this is the Pontiac Kappa platform. The Solstice was originally a design exercise authorized by Bob Lutz to generate excitement and show Pontiac was heading in a new direction.
