Very few motorcycles have the notoriety and presence of a Harley-Davidson. The Softail design was imagined by Bill Davis and he approached Harley but was turned down so he worked to produce his own bike. When the business failed Harley approached him and bought his patents and tooling and in 1983 for the '84 model year the first Harley-Davidson Softail was introduced to the market.
