In 1958, after nearly $250M in development costs, Ford debuted the all-new Edsel as a new model priced between the Ford and Mercury line-up of cars. Unfortunately, this was also a recession year and many Americans put off buying a new car, or they didn't buy the higher priced models. Four sub-series appeared on showroom floors across the country - Ranger and Pacer (Ford-based) and Corsair and Citation (Mercury-based) plus a line of Ford-based wagons. Sales were way below projections so Ford entered 1959 with only two sub-series - the Ranger and the Corsair. This Ranger we have is very typical of what the average Edsel buyer was purchasing for reliable transportation.
