The Pontiac GTO is an automobile that was built by Pontiac from 1964 to 1974. The first generation GTO was a muscle car of the 1960s and 1970s era. Although there were earlier muscle cars, the Pontiac GTO is considered by some to have started the trend with all four domestic automakers offering a variety of competing models. In 1966 the GTO became its own model until 1972. In 1973 GTO became an option again but for the Le Mans. In 1974 GTO then became an option on the Ventura. The GTO became a separate Pontiac model (model number 242 found at th beginning of the VIN) in 1966, instead of being an 'option package' on the Tempest LeMans. Pontiac's intermediate line was restyled, gaining more curvaceous styling with kicked-up rear fender lines for a 'Coke-bottle' look, and a slightly 'tunneled' backlight. In 1970 there was a limited run of about 626 drop-top Pace Car edition Cutlass-. Of those, only a limited 358 were not adorned with the 442 package. Driving the rarity further is the fact that this was powered by the 350 CID Rocket V8. It is estimated that only 60 of these were originally built by GM and an unknown number survive today.
