Chevrolet's Monte Carlo SS was well-loved when introduced, and they still have a solid following today because of their great looks, and plethora of options regarding aftermarket goodies and engines. The Monte Carlo SS, Buick Grand National and Oldsmobile 442's ruled the mid 80's with their great styling & performance, as did Pontiac's Grand Prix 2+2 Aero-Coupe.
The original 305 V8 was swapped out with a stout GM ZZ6 350 10,000 miles ago, featuring fast-burn 62cc aluminum heads, roller rockers, 4 bolt mains, forged crank & rods, and durable high silico pistons with 9. 72-1 compression. Advertised at 405 horses & 406 ft. lbs. of torque, it is (needless to say) a much better engine than the original one. Combined with the 4-speed automatic, it offers great performance, yet lower highway revs for better economy. A whole bunch of receipts come with it, and show the transmission was rebuilt as well.
