Many of our savvy readers might remember that the mid-size sedan Taurus range was one of America's best-selling vehicles during this time period, but this isn't any Taurus- the SHO's were limited production models and on another level in terms of performance. These first generation SHO (standing for 'Super High Output') cars were sold by Ford between 1989 and 1991 and pretty much represented the epitome of a factory spec hot rod. Ford contracted motorcycle builder Yamaha to turn its unexciting transverse-mounted 3. 0l Vulcan V6 engine into a powerful, responsive unit that delivered 220hp and accelerated from 0-60 in six and a half seconds with a reported top speed of 143mph. Similarly the 5-speed manual transmission designed by Mazda is a must in a car like this, which redlines at 7,000rpm.
