American Motors replaced what was formally known as Rambler in 1970. The Hornet would become American Motors flagship car from 1970-1977. As a matter of fact, the Hornet platform served AMC in one form or another for 18 years. Such models as the Gremlin, Concord, Spirit, and the all-wheel drive Eagle were derived from the Hornet. Marketed as a family compact, the Hornet was manufactured in two-door, four door and wagon configurations. With engine sizes running from a 199 cubic inch I6 to a 360 cubic inch power- house. American Motors marketed the Hornet in direct competition with what was to become the threatening foreign compact car battle of the 1970s.

Lincoln was born in 1917 as Fords luxury brand competing directly with Cadillac for market share in the personal luxury car segment.
