Back in the 60-s anyone who was into cars would be hard pressed not to find an ad in the back of a Popular Mechanics or Hot Vw-s magazine for a do it yourself Dune Buggy kit. The 60-s and 70-s were a great time for outdoor leisure activities and beach buggies were all the rage. Built off of a reliable easily maintained VW pan and drive train its easy to see why these were a great choice for recreational automobiles. The 1600cc flat four VW engine was rather peppy despite its sub 70hp rating but remove all of the sheet metal and put a light weight fiberglass body on top and you have the makings of something very quick. The current trend in buggies in the 2000-s is no longer low power light weight sand hoppers but quite the opposite. Current buggies are being built with 2332 and other exotic CC engines while being outfitted with dual carbs or turbo chargers to make for a terrifyingly fast street Machine.
