The new larger Beetle was labeled the 1302/1302 S. The main purpose of a new larger Beetle was to provide increased luggage capacity, which was increased by nearly 50%. MacPhearson strut suspension was added, similar to what was used in the Type 4, and the front track was also widened. The new suspension layout allowed the spare tire to be positioned flat under the trunk floor, although the car had to be lengthened slightly to accomplish this. This also allowed a reduction in turning radius making the already small platform, even more maneuverable. To gain additional room, the under-dash panel was lowered, allowing the fuel tank to be shifted rearward. From the windscreen back, the Super Beetle was identical to its smaller progenitor, except for having the semi-trailing arm rear suspension as standard equipment. This Beetle comes to us in...
