The Coronet debuted in 1949, one of the first post war designs and was the divisions highest trim level. The name 'Coronet' comes from a crown worn by royalty. The Coronets position in trim level would change with time but the legacy wouldn't be forgotten. Push up to the mid-60s and Dodge unveiled the 5th generation model that would enter into the muscle car wars. The Coronet would see 7 generations spanning up until 1976. Here we have something special! A '66 model that is a factory 426 Hemi car! Vin starts with WH23H67 which designates a '66 Coronet 440 2 dr. Hardtop with a 426ci Hemi built in St Louis, MO! The dark green exterior looks sinister on this car. Black and charcoal vinyl interior goes well with the tones and is in good order. The original motor may be gone but the owner sourced a rebuilt era correct 426ci Hemi to replace the 440 that had been installed after the original motor was removed. 2 - 4bbl carbs sit atop that monstrous Hemi! This is the car you want if you're looking for comfort, style and big Hemi power. The Coronet reappeared for the 1965 model year as the intermediate sized B-body car using a 117 inch wheel base. When reintroduced in this 5th generation it was the biggest selling vehicle Dodge made that year! This is the 2-door hardtop version of the car which is one of the most desirable of the period. In 1966 Coronet received a redesign and you started to be able to get the 426 Hemi as an option. The 440 Magnum that was in the RT produced 375hp but the 426 Hemi pushed out a whopping 425hp! This is an example of a powerplant that has to be driven to truly appreciate. This is a numbers matching vehicle that even has the blue stripe tires that were only available from Mopar, only available for the Hemi and only available in 1966! After being absent since 1959, the Coronet made itself known again after being reintroduced in 1965. During the model years of 1965 to 1967 nearly 650,000 Coronets were produced with choices of a two door sedan, hardtop, convertible, four door sedan or a six or 9 passenger station wagon. The Coronet was available in three options, the Coronet, Coronet 440 and the Coronet 500, this particular model is the sportier Coronet 500. In 1966 the Coronet was remodeled to be shorter and wider with more defining lines on the side fenders also, in 1966 it was reported that only 732 Hemi Coronets left the factory. This Coronet 500 has the massive power plant consisting of a 440 C. I. D Wedge V8 with a 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission.
