Ford first reprised the now-famous 1968 Ford Mustang GT that Steve McQueen drove in the movie 'Bullitt', when it brought out a Bullitt edition Mustang GT in 2001. The 2001 version was primarily enhanced for better handling than the stock GT, with a 3/4-inch lower ride height, Tokico shocks, and sub-frame connectors. It also received mild performance-enhancing upgrades vs. the stock GT, with higher flow mufflers and underdrive pulleys, along with a remapped ECM that enabled it to produce more torque at lower RPM. Other elements paying homage to the '68 that McQueen drove included gauge faces and seat upholstery patterned after McQueen's more famous Mustang.

In 2008, for the 40th anniversary of the movie, Ford brought us the next generation Bullitt, which sported several enhancements to differentiate it from mere Mustang GTs. In 2008, the Bullitt Mustangs were actually Mustang GTs with the optional Bullitt package; as opposed to being 'Bullitt Mustangs' like the 2001's were. They were only available in black or Dark Highland Green and came with modified badging with a unique satin finish and Bullitt crosshair medallion on the rear decklid. It is not unusual to net an 85 - 200 drop in intake air temperature (depending on application). This temperature drop results in a denser thus more powerful air/fuel ratio, it greatly reduces the chances of detonation or pre-ignition, and virtually eliminates the decrease in power sometimes felt in back-to-back runs and extended pulls in non-intercooled setups. This combination produces a whopping 435 horsepower with 400 feet pounds of torque! The California Special edition was originally introduced in 1968 as a limited run special edition. This was an appearance package which could be added to a Mustang GT. The package included Fog lights, hood pins, side scoops, a deck lid wing, and Thunderbird tail lights. Less than 5,000 of the 1968 GT/CS were produced making them rare and sought after. Ford paid homage to these 1968s by bringing back the package in the late 2000s. The new version of the package adds the following to a Mustang GT: two tone leather seats, unique floor mats, side stripes, side scoops, rolled exhaust tips, unique front and rear bumpers, and 17' polished wheels. This 2009 has seen some additional upgrades such as Foose wheels and tasteful engine bay dressings. This one is painted in Performance White over a two toned tan and black leather interior.
