The Chevrolet Malibu was named after the city of Malibu, CA and began in 1964 as a trim-level for the Chevrolet Chevelle. It did not become a stand-alone model line until 1978. The Malibu and all other Chevelles were completely restyled in 1968 with semi-fastback rooflines. Inside was an instrument panel that featured round gauges set in square pods, similar to what would appear in the Camaro line the following year.
