In late 2003, for the 2004 model year, the Pontiac GTO was relaunched in the U. S. market. The revival was prompted by former GM North America Chairman Bob Lutz. GM's Holden subsidiary assembled the GTO in Elizabeth, South Australia. It was equipped with the 5. 7 L LS1 V8 engine for the 2004 model year, the same engine found in the concurrent model year Chevrolet Corvette, with a choice of a 6-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic.
