The 1954 models were part of the tail end of Chevrolet's 'Advance Design' pickup line, which debuted in 1947 and lasted into 1955, when Chevy switched to their newer 'Task Force' Truck line. The earlier years of the Advance Design trucks featured 216 CID inline 6-cylinder engines, which were notably not as reliable as the 235 CID I-6 engines that Chevrolet introduced in 1954: the Babbitt bearing/splash-lubrication design of the 216 just didn't have the longevity potential of the 235.
