Ford first reprised the now-famous 1968 Ford Mustang GT that Steve McQueen drove in the movie 'Bullitt', when it brought out a Bullitt edition Mustang GT in 2001. The 2001 version was primarily enhanced for better handling than the stock GT, with a 3/4-inch lower ride height, Tokico shocks, and sub-frame connectors. It also received mild performance-enhancing upgrades vs. the stock GT, with higher flow mufflers and underdrive pulleys, along with a remapped ECM that enabled it to produce more torque at lower RPM. Other elements paying homage to the '68 that McQueen drove included gauge faces and seat upholstery patterned after McQueen's more famous Mustang.
They were only available in black or Dark Highland Green and came with modified badging with a unique satin finish and Bullitt crosshair medallion on the rear decklid. They also received special 18-inch aluminum wheels, featuring a Machined flange and dark gray satin spokes. Interior features consisted of a unique aluminum shifter ball, engine-turned instrument panel bezel, special pedal covers, revised instrument clusters with 'gunsight' graphics, Shelby GT500-style sport front bucket seats, special aluminum sill plates with Bullitt logo, and a serialization plate on the strut tower brace in the engine bay.
